Sandy Starkweather

PhD Arctic Research Program

Sandy is on detail to NOAA’s Arctic Research Program to support program management and strategic planning; she has been a research scientist at NOAA-ESRL since 2010. Sandy has a background in engineering, climate science and science policy. Her work focuses improving the coordination, harmonization and utilization of Arctic observations, as well as improving interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dialogs, through collaborative vehicles like the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC) and the International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA). As Senior Scientist for IARPC, Sandy’s responsibilities include enhancing interdisciplinary connections across IARPC Collaboration Teams and with their outside partners and leading the development of the Arctic Research Plan 2017-2021, soon to be released by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. She has recently been named Executive Director of the new interagency US Arctic Observing Network.
